Are You Ready For a Breakdown?

Breakdown essentials

According to a recent survey, almost 60% of Irish drivers are unprepared should their car break down. Suzanne Keane offers some tips on how to be prepared in the event of a breakdown.

With a little preparation, you can be ready for most breakdown situations. Even if you do have breakdown cover or roadside rescue the following items can be useful until someone else arrives to help.

  • Torch
  • High-Vis Vest
  • Warning triangle
  • First aid kit
  • Spare bulbs
  • Jump leads
  • Tow rope
  • Fire extinguisher

Check with your insurance company to see if breakdown assistance is included in your policy. If not, you may want to consider taking out cover separately – No one wants to be stranded on the roadside for too long!!

If your car is able to drive, keep going until you find a safe place to pull in. If your car breaks down in a dangerous place and you can’t move it – get out! Try to get to a safe place where you can warn other motorists to slow down so they don’t crash into your car.

If you breakdown on the motorway wrap up warm, put your hazard warning lights on and get out of the car. Climb over the crash barrier to a safe place and wait there for help to arrive!!
