Dublin City Council Traffic Update – New Measures Coming into Effect from Sunday, 25 May 2025

Dublin City Council is reminding the public that the next phase of the Dublin City Centre Transport Plan 2023 will come into effect this Sunday, 25 May 2025.

These new traffic management measures support the policies and objectives outlined in the Dublin City Development Plan 2022–2028. They are designed to address the significant volume of through-traffic in the city centre — with around 60% of general traffic not stopping to work, shop, or visit, but simply passing through.

What’s Changing from 25 May?

At the junction of Westland Row and Pearse Street, a key traffic change will be introduced:

  • Only public transport, taxis, and cyclists will be permitted to turn left from Westland Row onto Pearse Street.

  • A new right turn for general traffic (cars and delivery vans) will be introduced at this junction.

  • The section of Pearse Street between Westland Row and Sandwith Street will become two-way.

  • Access from Lombard Street East and Sandwith Street Upper remains unchanged.

To accommodate high-sided vehicles, access to Westland Row will be maintained due to height restrictions on nearby railway bridges. However, Westland Row will no longer serve as a through route to Pearse Street, ensuring public transport is given priority.

Importantly, there are no changes to disabled parking bays, loading bays, or taxi ranks in the area.

Looking Ahead

By reducing non-essential traffic along Pearse Street and onto Tara Street, these changes create an opportunity to reimagine these streets — with enhanced facilities for walking, cycling, and public transport, all in line with the city’s long-term sustainable transport goals.

The new traffic restrictions will be in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
