First Drive: Kia Stinger

Kia Stinger

Suzanne Keane gets behind the wheel of Kia’s new sports car with rear-wheel drive and a twin-turbo V6 engine

What is it? The Stinger is the fastest production vehicle in Kia’s history – designed in Frankfurt and perfected at the Nürburgring. The rear wheel drive “sports sedan” has been developed from the 2011 Kia GT concept.

First impressions of the new Kia Stinger? The low slung Stinger with its sloping roofline, wide stance and muscular shoulders certainly looks the part. Brembo callipers peek out from behind the smoked 19” alloy wheels and four oval exhaust pipes show that the Stinger isn’t just a looker.

What about the interior? In practical terms the Kia Stinger offers adequate space for 5 and their luggage. However, after sliding into the red nappa leather cabin practicality is probably the last thing on your mind. The seating position is excellent and if you’ve ever driven a Kia the dashboard is familiar. A wireless charging pad is fitted in the centre console and a 7” touchscreen infotainment system paired with a head up display will keep you informed on the road. Upgrading to an optional 8” screen will get you a 720 watt Harman-Kardon 15 speaker system, complete with subwoofers under the driver and front passenger seats. Back to the boring stuff – the boot can take 406 litres and the wheelbase has been extended to allow more legroom for passengers.

And on the road? The Kia Stinger will be available with two engine options in Ireland – a 3.3L V6 365bhp twin turbocharged lump that will do 0-100kmph in 4.9 seconds. There will also be a 2.2L turbocharged diesel engine (200bhp). Both come with an 8 speed auto gearbox and paddle shift option. We tested the 3.3L V6 version around the Kildare countryside on a slightly damp day. Behind the glorious grunt is a very tail happy Stinger that doesn’t want to be tamed. Acceleration is impressive and it feels extremely solid on the road – as long as you can keep that rear end under control!

How Much? The 2.2L diesel Stinger is priced from €53,895 from March next year while the 3.3L petrol starts from €66,895 and is available to order now. Road tax for the diesel engine will be €390 while the V6 will cost you €2,350 annually.

How Safe? The Kia Stinger comes with 7 airbags, ISOFIX in the rear, blind spot collision warning, driver attention warning, forward collision avoidance assist, high beam assist, lane keeping assist, smart cruise control and an Active hood lift system for pedestrian protection

What about my options? Trim levels include GT line (18” alloys over 320mm vented front discs and 315mm solid rear discs) and GT (19” alloys wrapped in 225/40 front tyres and 255.35 rear tyres with 350mm vented brembo discs on the front and 340mm at the rear, LED headlamps and dual twin exhaust).

3 words to describe the Kia Stinger: Muscular; Smooth; Wild
