Storm Safety

As our long and stormy Winter looks like it’s going to get a lot longer, Suzanne Keane has some safety tips to keep in mind

1. Headlights

Make sure to keep your headlights on AT ALL TIMES! If visibility is bad you need to ensure you can be seen. If any of your bulbs are dim or not working replace them straight away.

2. Floods

Avoid driving through any flood water unless you’re sure you can make it to the other side. Never drive through water that’s higher than the middle of your wheels (and make sure your exhaust is well above the water level). If you don’t know how deep it is find another route! Always test your brakes when you drive out of a flood. We have more tips on driving in heavy rain and floods here.

3. Parking

If you have a garage, use it! Otherwise don’t leave your car parked under/near a tree and if there’s a chance of flooding make sure to park on higher ground.

4. Think

If you can’t see where you’re going find somewhere safe to pull in. Always keep a torch, bottle of water and high-vis jacket in the car. Make sure your phone is fully charged and keep a car charger in the glovebox just in case. Keeping the fuel tank full is also a good idea!

5. Safety

Don’t drive underneath or over any power lines that are damaged, give trucks and other high sided vehicles a wide berth and take your time! Unless you really have to go out during a storm, don’t. Sit at home, light a fire and watch a good DVD instead!
