Susie Wolff has confirmed today that she has been appointed Official Test Driver for WILLIAMS MARTINI RACING for the 2015 Formula One season. This move sees a huge step up in the right direction for the 31 year old Scot’s F1 career.
This promotion will see Susie take to the grid in the Williams Mercedes FW37 in two FP1 sessions and two test days during the 2015 Formula One season. She will also be conducting extensive simulator testing to help in the ongoing development of the team’s cars, the FW37 and FW38.
Wolff has gradually progressed since joining Williams in 2012 as Development driver. In July this year she was the first female to drive in a Grand Prix weekend for two decades when she got behind the wheel at Silverstone for a free practice session and then again two weeks later at Hockenheim. At the German GP she impressed with a speed that was just 0.227 seconds behind team-mate Felipe Massa – an 11-time grand prix winner.
At the time, 2014 World Champion Lewis Hamilton, who she raced against when they were juniors in karting and also Formula Renault, said Wolff’s participation at two practice sessions this season was fully deserved:
“She’s very, very talented, it’s really cool to see her in a Formula One car.
“I didn’t race against many girls. Susie was one of the very few, if not the only one, I raced against. We shared a podium together a couple of times.”
Speaking about her new role Susie Wolff said; “I feel ready for this next step and I am delighted Williams are recognising my progression, hard work and that it is performance that counts, not my gender.
“Williams is at a very exciting stage in its history and we are moving into 2015 with fantastic momentum, I’m proud to be part of the team. I’ll be using my position to work closely with Felipe and Valtteri to make sure that the FW37 builds on the strong performance shown by the FW36.”
