Question
Hi there,
I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction for buying a car. The one I have at the moment is my Dad’s old car- a 2000 Hyundai Accent- so I don’t have any experience in buying a car. I’m a student in college and I have no job, so my budget is very small. Really, I can only afford €1,000 – €1,500.
I know I’ll be looking at fairly old cars with this budget, but ideally I’d love a car that will last me a while without being in and out of the garage all the time, like I am now…! So basically, if you could recommend a reliable car on a tiny wee budget.
Thanks, Rebecca Murphy
Answer
Hi Rebecca,
Thanks for the question. With this tight budget you want something small, reliable and cheap to run. Good options would be a ten year or older Ford Fiesta, Ford Ka, Nissan Micra or VW Polo. Don’t restrict yourself too much to any particular model or make; what you need to look for is a car that is in fairly good condition, regularly serviced and has been generally looked after. If it looks good on the outside then the chances are good that it has been cared for inside as well! Before you buy anything make sure someone can check it over for the basic safety aspects and always examine the car in daylight!
Hope this helps and if we can do anything else just let us know
