SEAT Ateca<\/p><\/div>\n

It seems every car maker wants a slice of the compact SUV segment and SEAT is the latest to join the competition writes Geraldine Herbert<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

What is it?<\/strong> \u00a0SEAT’s first SUV has found favour with Irish buyers and already accounts for 30% of their sales this year.<\/p>\n

Styling?<\/strong> Outside, it is robust and handsome and SEAT have struck a nice balance \u00a0between muscular aggression and \u00a0style with the design of the Ateca.<\/p>\n

Under the Bonnet?<\/strong> Powering the range is a good mix of petrol, a 1.0 and 1.4 and 1.6TDI and 2.0TDI diesel engines. \u00a0Our test car was the 1.4 petrol.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>What about inside?<\/strong> Inside, it is functional and some of the plastics feel cheap, but durable nonetheless. Back-seat passengers fare well with a lot of headroom, and the driver and front passenger, likewise, have a lot of space and legroom. The boot, at 510 litres, can swallow a weekly shop and more, and is 80 litres larger than that of the Nissan Qashqai<\/p>\n

On the Road?<\/strong> \u00a0On the road, the Ateca is good to drive with plenty of grip and little body roll but it feels harsh on poor roads. \u00a0The 1.4 petrol may not be the obvious engine choice, but it is well worth considering as it is perky and offers reasonable economy. The optional all-wheel drive gives it an adventurous feel and the reassurance of knowing you can survive the rigours of an Arctic blast.<\/p>\n

And Safety? \u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Packed full of safety features, it achieved the full five stars when tested by the Euro NCAP crash-testing, with an impressive 93% for adult occupant protection.<\/p>\n

What are my options?<\/strong> Three equipment lines are offered: entry-level S, SE and XCELLENCE. The entry level S trim is a little on the sparse side so \u00a0upgrade to SE for 8″ Colour touch screen radio, 2 USB, SD Card, CD, Aux-in,Voice Recognition, 8 Speakers), Front fog lights with cornering function, Rear park distance control, LED rear lights,\u00a0 Cruise control, Interior chrome trim, Black moulding on wheel arches and Black roof rails.\u00a0 Splash out on the top-of-the-range and you get roof rails and window frames in chrome, dark tinted windows and 18in alloy wheels.<\/p>\n

Will it break the bank?<\/strong> \u00a0Compared to rivals the Ateca is competitively priced and should hold its value. Prices for the SE 1.4-litre petrol start from \u20ac28,720 but there is also a 1-litre version that starts from \u20ac25,120. Our test car returns 5.3 l\/100km with CO2 of 122. Fuel costs will be cheapest in the 1.6 diesel which returns 4.3 litres per 100, but it you don\u2019t do high mileage opt for a petrol.<\/p>\n

What it says about you? <\/strong>You like driving an attractive and practical crossover without paying premium prices<\/p>\n

Verdict?<\/strong> SEAT’s Ateca won’t make you stand out from the crowd but its a comfortable, spacious and sensible way to carry five without breaking the bank.<\/p>\n
