Smarter, more economical and still fun to drive our\u00a0Guest\u00a0Reviewer, RT\u00c9 2FM\u2019s Ruth Scott\u00a0has been checking out the new Mazda2<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The Mazda2 was previewed in the heart of Barcelona in the brand new Mazda Space. This is the new central hub for Mazda\u2019s European events. Barcelona being the city of food, fashion, football and design was the perfect spot to give us a sneak preview of the new Mazda2 before the car arrived in Ireland.<\/p>\n

There are 3 petrol and 1 diesel engine options, with 4 specification levels. Nestled in the A2 tax band, the 2014-2015 Car Of the Year in Japan is a joy to behold. Your expectations of a supermini will go out the door. Mazda does Kodo design. In short, it uses technology & building spec for a much bigger car but has adapted it for the much smaller Mazda2. It also has the thrifty, fuel efficient \u201cSkyactiv\u201d engine.<\/p>\n

Outside, its low-sitting lights, front body & broad grille, make it look bigger, sturdier almost. Granted the cabin was shifted back to create more room and the wheel base extended by 8cm. You may not choose this car to road trip with a car full of six-footers but with the extra elbow room, I can see this as a small family car. AHA! I hear you say! With the cabin shifted back, the boot must be weenchy! Not at all.\u00a0 Furthermore, because of the more frequently appearing canister of tyre-repair foam instead of a spare wheel, the boot is much deeper. This will improve fuel efficiency further as you\u2019re not dragging around the extra weight of the spare wheel. You can also fold down the back seats to massively increase the capacity of the boot. A light boot lid seals the deal on a surprisingly spacious Mazda2.<\/p>\n

Mazda have done huge research into all aspects of the design aesthetic. Not alone the texture and style of fabrics and hard surfaces, but how they blend together. And who would have thought so much of the colours?! There are a choice of 10 colours for the Mazda2 including a few new colours, such as Dynamic Blue and Smokey Rose. Dark blue represents sophistication and vivid blue is now a symbol for \u201cgreen\u201d or eco friendly features in cars. Green was out of favour for a time but Spirited Green marked a revival on the outgoing Mazda and now green tones appear to be making a comeback in both fashion and furniture. White remains an important fleet colour. New surface applications have made white more durable and more prevalent. Just look at any Apple product.<\/p>\n

The interior is sporty. In a supermini! Interior materials are of a high quality and with a finish you might not often associate with a car in this category. You can colour coordinate the cabin. With four adults comfortable in the car, the large front door pockets hold the water bottles and other spots are available for coins & phones. The 7\u201d very functional touch screen keeps the interior sleek.<\/p>\n

Maybe I should focus on the lightweight agility of the car. Admittedly, I test-drove this in a miserable rain soaked Barcelona with heavy traffic and slippery roads, but it handled every tight corner and some stretches of suburbia very easily and comfortably. All models come with anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control and traction control. All of these things not only make you feel safer on the roads; they actually keep you safer on the roads.<\/p>\n

I wouldn\u2019t say that Mazda2 is a tardis inside but it definitely has the feel of a larger car. Again, pair that with the appearance of a wider body on the outside, or \u201cmuscular\u201d as Mazda call it, it may well be a bigger car masquerading as a supermini! I’ll let you know more when I drive it.<\/p>\n
