Whether driving for work or over seeing employees on the road we have some guidelines you need to follow writes Suzanne Keane<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

For Employees \u2013<\/strong><\/h4>\n
    \n
  1. Always follow the rules of the road<\/li>\n
  2. Double check with your employer that you\u2019re insured to drive the vehicle<\/li>\n
  3. Make sure you have the correct licence for the vehicle type<\/li>\n
  4. Check that the vehicle is taxed and has the correct NCT\/DOE certification (if applicable)<\/li>\n
  5. Check tyres and fluids before setting off \u2013 if you\u2019re not happy with anything make sure to raise this with your manager and don\u2019t drive anywhere!<\/li>\n
  6. Load \u2013 if you feel the vehicle is overladen REFUSE to drive it until the load has been checked!<\/li>\n
  7. Before setting off make sure any stock you\u2019re carrying is securely fastened and won\u2019t move during the journey.<\/li>\n
  8. If you\u2019re using your own vehicle for work make sure that your private insurance will cover it<\/li>\n
  9. Mileage\/Expenses \u2013 remember that any mileage costs paid should allow for wear & tear on your own car as well as a portion of tax\/insurance and not just cover fuel costs!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

     <\/p>\n

    For Employers \u2013<\/strong><\/h4>\n
      \n
    1. Make sure you check out an employee\u2019s licence before handing over the keys to a company vehicle<\/li>\n
    2. Ensure the company vehicle you\u2019re providing is adequate for the job<\/li>\n
    3. Keep vehicles regularly maintained<\/li>\n
    4. Provide each employee with a safety checklist to carry out on the vehicle periodically<\/li>\n
    5. Training \u2013 it may be worthwhile sending employees who drive regularly on an advanced driving course<\/li>\n
    6. Risk Assessment \u2013 Create a safety document to cover all driving activities.<\/li>\n
    7. Overloading \u2013 don\u2019t overload vehicles!<\/li>\n
    8. Time \u2013 Don\u2019t create impossible time frames which can, in turn, encourage dangerous driving!<\/li>\n
    9. Breaks \u2013 encourage employees who are driving to take regular coffee breaks<\/li>\n
    10. All of the above should apply even when an employee is using their own car for work-related driving!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
