{"id":15501,"date":"2016-08-18T18:17:39","date_gmt":"2016-08-18T17:17:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wheelsforwomen.ie\/?p=15501"},"modified":"2016-08-21T17:50:59","modified_gmt":"2016-08-21T16:50:59","slug":"first-drive-tesla-model-s-p90d","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wheelsforwomen.ie\/index.php\/first-drive-tesla-model-s-p90d\/","title":{"rendered":"First drive: Tesla Model S P90D"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_15505\" style=\"width: 435px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wheelsforwomen.ie\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/tesla_main.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-15505\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15505\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15505\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wheelsforwomen.ie\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/tesla_main.jpg\" alt=\"Tesla Model S\" width=\"425\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wheelsforwomen.ie\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/tesla_main.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.wheelsforwomen.ie\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/tesla_main-274x300.jpg 274w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15505\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tesla Model S<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><em>If you think<\/em><\/strong><strong><em> electric cars are boring think again the Tesla Model S\u00a0is about as sexy as going green gets <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>writes Geraldine Herbert<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What is it?<\/strong> The Model S a full-sized, five-door and is Tesla\u2019s first flagship product.\u00a0 Despite being an electric car Elon Musk, the billionaire co-founder of PayPal and CEO of Tesla \u00a0has always maintained the Model S is a car you will buy for its driving dynamics, the green credentials are just a bonus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First impressions of the new Tesla Model S?<\/strong> In terms of size it is bigger than a five series BMW but smaller than a seven. \u00a0It\u2019s also got the option of seven seats, as there are two extra in the back, so it is unlike anything else in this market.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What about the interior?\u00a0 <\/strong>Stylish and uncluttered a large touch screen in the centre console allows you to control virtually everything from the satnav to the steering feel and suspension. \u00a0Fans of Mercedes Benz will \u00a0instantly recognise the transmission gear lever on the steering column and the windows switches, all have been borrowed from the German car maker.<\/p>\n<p>There is plenty of space for luggage also as you get two boots &#8211; one in the front plus the main one at the back. The lack of storage and cubby holes inside the cabin is a little disappointing though and you will be scrambling to find places for keys, water etc .<\/p>\n<p><strong>How Smart is it?<\/strong> \u00a0As you approach the car with key \u00a0the door handles slide out. Inside there\u2019s no starter button just place your foot on the brake and the car comes to life. Simply select drive and you are on your way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the range? <\/strong>If you drive the car reasonably sensible you can expect to come close to the 500 km plus range but drive it hard and you will probably reduce that by about 75%. <strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tesla Model S on road? \u00a0<\/strong>Despite a hefty weight, the road handling is impressive and it is comfortable and refined. It feels very \u201cnormal\u201d so its \u00a0easy to forget about that intoxicating power that can be unleashed at any time.\u00a0 Our test car, the top of the range P90D, came with \u201cludicrous mode\u201d which means it \u00a0goes from zero\u00a0to 100km\/h in 2.8 seconds, so it will keep pace with a Lamborghini Huracan and a McLaren 650S and only the Koenigsegg One and the Bugatti Veyron are faster<em>.\u00a0 <\/em>Behind the wheel it feels even quicker than the figures suggest as it is pure straight line acceleration.
