{"id":15642,"date":"2016-09-12T20:59:09","date_gmt":"2016-09-12T19:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wheelsforwomen.ie\/?p=15642"},"modified":"2016-09-13T08:29:40","modified_gmt":"2016-09-13T07:29:40","slug":"alcohol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wheelsforwomen.ie\/index.php\/alcohol\/","title":{"rendered":"10 common driving errors resulting from alcohol"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wheelsforwomen.ie\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/pedest.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-15645\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-15645\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wheelsforwomen.ie\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/pedest.jpg\" alt=\"pedest\" width=\"850\" height=\"591\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wheelsforwomen.ie\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/pedest.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.wheelsforwomen.ie\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/pedest-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wheelsforwomen.ie\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/pedest-768x534.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nA <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rsa.ie\/Documents\/Press%20Office\/Fatal%20Collisions%202008-2012_Alcohol%20as%20a%20Factor.pdf\">new report<\/a> from the Road Safety Authority (RSA) has revealed that between 2008 and 2012, alcohol was a contributory factor in 38% of all fatal collisions.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of the\u00a0867 collisions analysed the report found that<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>38% of all fatal collisions involved a driver, motorcyclist, cyclist or pedestrian who had consumed alcohol<\/li>\n<li>29% of all\u00a0 fatal collisions involved a driver or motorcyclist\u00a0 who had consumed alcohol<\/li>\n<li>9% of all fatal collisions involved a pedestrian who had consumed alcohol<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of the 947 people killed in the 867 collisions analysed, alcohol was a contributory factor in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>38% of all driver deaths<\/li>\n<li>30% of all motorcyclist deaths<\/li>\n<li>47% of all pedestrian deaths<\/li>\n<li>42% of all passenger deaths<\/li>\n<li>86% of drivers and 51% of passengers not wearing seatbelt who had consumed alcohol were killed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of the 330 alcohol related collisions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 in 10 of all driver alcohol related collisions occurred between 7am and 11am.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>The Road Safety Authority has identified the 10 most common driving errors resulting from alcohol<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>1)<\/strong> Drivers&#8217; peripheral vision (side vision) is affected making it difficult to see signs and other road uses and lengthening reaction time to hazards<\/p>\n<p><strong>2)<\/strong> Drivers react to alcohol consumption by driving too slow or too fast<\/p>\n<p><strong>3)<\/strong> Drivers drive in the wrong lane<\/p>\n<p><strong>4)<\/strong> Drivers lose control and run over the kerb<\/p>\n<p><strong>5)<\/strong> Drivers weave in and out of traffic lanes<\/p>\n<p><strong>6)<\/strong> Smooth control is reduced or lost altogether so that driver make quick or jerky movements<\/p>\n<p><strong>7)<\/strong> Drivers forget to signal or use headlights<\/p>\n<p><strong>8)<\/strong> Drivers&#8217; vehicles may straddle lanes<\/p>\n<p><strong>9)<\/strong> Drivers fail to stop when they need to, e.g. at stop signs or red lights<\/p>\n<p><strong>10)<\/strong> Drivers overtake in a dangerous manner<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Never ever drink and drive.
