But what exactly is a PCP and who is it best suited to asks Geraldine Herbert<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"20\"><strong data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"18\">What is a PCP?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"22\" data-end=\"292\">PCP (Personal Contract Plan) is a type of car finance that offers <strong data-start=\"88\" data-end=\"116\">lower monthly repayments<\/strong> compared to traditional HP or bank loans. This is because, instead of paying off the full cost of the car, you are <strong data-start=\"232\" data-end=\"266\">only covering its depreciation<\/strong> over the contract term.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"294\" data-end=\"528\">At the end of the agreement, you have three choices:<br data-start=\"346\" data-end=\"349\" \/>1\ufe0f\u20e3 <strong data-start=\"353\" data-end=\"379\">Make the final payment<\/strong> (also known as the GMFV) and own the car.<br data-start=\"421\" data-end=\"424\" \/>2\ufe0f\u20e3 <strong data-start=\"428\" data-end=\"446\">Return the car<\/strong> and walk away.<br data-start=\"461\" data-end=\"464\" \/>3\ufe0f\u20e3 <strong data-start=\"468\" data-end=\"483\">Trade it in<\/strong> for a new model using any equity built up.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"530\" data-end=\"736\">PCP deposits typically range from <strong data-start=\"564\" data-end=\"578\">10% to 30%<\/strong> of the car\u2019s value, which can be paid in cash or covered by trading in your current vehicle. These agreements usually last between <strong data-start=\"710\" data-end=\"733\">three to five years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"738\" data-end=\"1000\">A <strong data-start=\"740\" data-end=\"782\">Guaranteed Minimum Future Value (GMFV)<\/strong> is set at the start, representing the car\u2019s projected worth at the end of the contract. Your deposit and GMFV are deducted from the total cost, and you make monthly payments (plus interest) on the remaining balance.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1002\" data-end=\"1005\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1007\" data-end=\"1034\"><strong data-start=\"1011\" data-end=\"1032\">What to Consider?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1035\" data-end=\"1168\">PCP offers can be tempting, such as \u201cDrive away in a new car for \u20ac200 a month\u201d, but these deals often assume a 30% deposit.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1170\" data-end=\"1173\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1175\" data-end=\"1191\"><strong data-start=\"1179\" data-end=\"1189\">Pros \u2705<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1192\" data-end=\"1546\">\u2714 <strong data-start=\"1194\" data-end=\"1220\">Lower Monthly Payments<\/strong> \u2013 Compared to a standard car loan, you are financing a smaller amount.<br data-start=\"1291\" data-end=\"1294\" \/>\u2714 <strong data-start=\"1296\" data-end=\"1316\">Equity Potential<\/strong> \u2013 If your car is worth more than the GMFV at the end of the contract, you can use the difference towards your next car.<br data-start=\"1436\" data-end=\"1439\" \/>\u2714 <strong data-start=\"1441\" data-end=\"1460\">Easier Upgrades<\/strong> \u2013 Swap for a new model every few years without worrying about selling your old car.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1548\" data-end=\"1551\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1553\" data-end=\"1569\"><strong data-start=\"1557\" data-end=\"1567\">Cons \u274c<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1570\" data-end=\"2007\">\u26a0 <strong data-start=\"1572\" data-end=\"1595\">Large Final Payment<\/strong> \u2013 If you want to keep the car, you must pay the GMFV, which can be a significant amount.<br data-start=\"1684\" data-end=\"1687\" \/>\u26a0 <strong data-start=\"1689\" data-end=\"1713\">Risk of Repossession<\/strong> \u2013 Missing payments means the finance provider can take the car back.<br data-start=\"1782\" data-end=\"1785\" \/>\u26a0 <strong data-start=\"1787\" data-end=\"1806\">Early Exit Fees<\/strong> \u2013 Cancelling your PCP agreement before the term ends can be costly.<br data-start=\"1874\" data-end=\"1877\" \/>\u26a0 <strong data-start=\"1879\" data-end=\"1910\">Mileage &amp; Maintenance Rules<\/strong> \u2013 You must stay within agreed mileage limits and maintain the car properly to avoid penalties.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2009\" data-end=\"2012\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"2014\" data-end=\"2038\"><strong data-start=\"2018\" data-end=\"2036\">Final Thoughts<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2039\" data-end=\"2240\">PCP is ideal for those who like to upgrade cars frequently and want lower monthly payments.
