At its heart the V40 Cross Country may still be a hatchback but the extra body cladding certainly gives it more menacing road presence and serious attitude.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who is it aimed at?<\/strong>\u00a0Soft off roaders, like the Cross Country, are designed to bridge the gap between a family hatchback and a compact SUV but in reality they offer the same amount of space as a regular hatchback. Think of them as rugged hatchbacks with a modicum of off-road ability.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Styling?<\/strong><b>\u00a0<\/b>The V40 is one of the best looking hatchbacks on the road so the bumper cladding can only enhance its brawny appeal and the Cross Country is certainly eye-catching. Our test car came in a particularly enticing metallic Raw Copper.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>Under the Bonnet?<\/strong><b>\u00a0<\/b>We drove the D3 Cross Country Geartronic. This 2 litre diesel engine goes from 0 to 100km\/h in a swift 9.3seconds, before reaching a top speed of 200km\/h. \u00a0It was fitted with a smooth six-speed automatic transmission.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s it like inside?<\/strong><b>\u00a0<\/b>The V40 Cross Country shares its interior with the hatchback so it\u2019s reassuringly simple and stylish.\u00a0Space is good throughout but the sweeping roofline does compromise headroom a little in the front and rear legroom is only adequate. Boot space is identical to the hatchback and is a practical 335 litres that extends up to a maximum 1,032 litre. The boot opening itself is a little on the small side so bulkier items may prove difficult to actually fit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the Road?<\/strong><b>\u00a0<\/b>We loved the sharp steering and sporty ride in the V40 hatchback and on the road the Cross Country feels very similar. The extra height is evident only on sharp bends where there is a slight amount of body roll but what it loses in sportiness it more than compensates for in a smoother and more comfortable ride.<b> <\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wheelsforwomen.ie\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/v40_cc_2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5522\" alt=\"The two-piece, 40\/60 split, rear seat backrest can be easily folded\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wheelsforwomen.ie\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/v40_cc_2.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wheelsforwomen.ie\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/v40_cc_2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.wheelsforwomen.ie\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/v40_cc_2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>And Safety?<\/strong><b>\u00a0<\/b>The V40 is the world\u2019s safest car and is packed with a host of safety features, including the world\u2019s first airbag system to protect pedestrians so as expected the Cross Country is equally as safe.\u00a0 As standard, the Cross Country ES is equipped with City Safety technology, DSTC (Dynamic Stability Traction Control) system and Pedestrian airbag, power windows, ECC (electronic climate control), leather steering wheel and gear-knob.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Options?<\/strong>\u00a0The V40 Cross Country is available from \u20ac29,095 for the D2 Cross Country ES, up to the \u00a0D4 (177 hp) SE LUX Geartronic Start\/Stop at \u20ac39,745.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How about Fuel Economy?<\/strong>\u00a0Our test car proved very economical and delivers a fuel sipping 5.2 litres per 100kms on a combined cycle of motorway and urban driving.
