Crucially its also lighter thanks the use of high strength steel which should make if far more nimble on the road and easier on fuel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who is it aimed at?<\/strong> There is no denying the importance of the Octavia in \u0160koda\u2019s line up. Over the years it has accounted for almost 40% of their overall sales and has been bought by everyone from families outgrowing their hatchbacks to taxi drivers looking for reliability and space.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Styling?<\/strong> The changes from the last model are not immediately apparent but overall the look is sleeker and more elegant. The Octavia is not going to win any beauty contests but it is certainly a smart modern looking car.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Under the Bonnet:<\/strong> Our test car was powered by a punchy 2.0 diesel that dashes from 0 \u2013 100 km in a respectable 8.3 seconds. Other engine options include a 1.6 diesel and a 1.2, 1.4\u00a0 and 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol models. There are also four different gearboxes to choose that range from a 5 speed manual to a seven speed automatic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What about Inside?<\/strong> Climb inside and it\u2019s very much a VW, the interior is reassuringly contemporary, clean and simply styled. Everything from the controls to the buttons and knobs are all easy to use. But it is space that really sets the Octavia apart from rivals and as expected driver and passenger space is vast. The boot measures a whopping 590 litres which is larger than the Ford Mondeo, VW\u2019s Passat and the Toyota Avensis.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6301\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wheelsforwomen.ie\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/oct3.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6301\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6301\" alt=\"The large 590-litre boot is extendable to 1,580 litres\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wheelsforwomen.ie\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/oct3.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wheelsforwomen.ie\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/oct3.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.wheelsforwomen.ie\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/oct3-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6301\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The large 590-litre\u00a0boot is extendable to\u00a01,580 litres<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>On the Road?<\/strong> Behind the wheel you quickly appreciate the lightness of the car and the strong pulling power of the 2.0 litre diesel engine. There is more than enough oomph \u00a0for overtaking or merging onto the motorway and it is beautifully solid, responsive and stable on the road. \u00a0On the downside it gets a little noisy at speeds and the ride is a little too firm for some tastes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And Safety?<\/strong> \u00a0The Octavia is well equipped with electronic stability control, ABS, 9 airbags traction control and a host of cutting-edge safety systems such as Adaptive Cruise Assistant, Lane Assistant, and Intelligent Light Assistant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Options?<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0The new Octavia comes in three specification levels, Active, Ambition and Elegance, and there is a high level of standard safety and comfort equipment. Prices for the petrol Octavia start at \u20ac\u20ac18,995 and \u20ac22,195 for the diesel range.Introduced this month is the vRS, the fastest Octavia ever comes with a starting price of\u00a0\u20ac32,495.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What about fuel economy?<\/strong> Our diesel test car is one of the most economical cars around. The results of the weight saving measures are impressive; with CO2 emissions of just 106g\/km annual road tax for our test car is \u20ac190. Around the city it consumes a frugal 5.0 litres per 100 kilometres and on a mix of urban and motorway driving an excellent 4.1 litres per 100 km.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Okay so the Verdict?\u00a0<\/strong> The new Skoda Octavia makes a super family car. It&#8217;s elegant on the outside and cavernous on the inside.
