It is plush and durable in equal measure, making it ideal for family duties and anyone with infant car seats will appreciate the easy access to the rear. It is spacious enough for five adults, and the boot stores 589 litres. The fold down seats are one of the best features. With a flick of a lever the rear seats fold revealing a van like 1,669 litres of luggage capacity available

On the Road? It cruises smoothly around town with plenty of power. Steering is direct and nicely weighted, and it feels well planted on the motorway and composed through corners and all the while quiet enough not to bother you.

And Safety? There is no need to fret about safety the CR-V comes with a full range of safety equipment designed to help the driver avoid or mitigate an accident, or to protect the occupants should a crash become unavoidable. In addition the new CR-V features Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) Body Structure, a well-established part of Honda’s safety arsenal and is designed to absorb impact energy in the event of a collision and divert it away from the passenger compartment

Options? Prices for the 1.6 diesel start at €31,995. Opt for the larger diesel engine with four wheel drive and the entry level SE is priced at €39,295. Moving up to ES the next specification adds €1,800 to the price tag at €41,075 while the range topping EX is available at €46,895.

What about fuel economy? Fuel saving aids abound including Honda’s Eco Assist that advises drivers through the dashboard display on how their driving style impacts on economy. The colour of the dial edges changes from white to green when driving more efficiently. And the results are impressive our 2.2 litre diesel returns anywhere between 5.6 to 6.8 litres per 100 kms on a combined cycle (62.8 to 41.5 mpg) depending on whether you choose manual or automatic

Okay so the Verdict? The Compact SUV market is certainly a crowded one as motorists eagerly embrace these smaller wallet friendly crossovers. The 2.2 turbo diesel CR-V equipped with four-wheel drive is a real treat. The 1.6 litre option is super frugal but if you plan on tackling more rough terrain than on the average dash to the supermarket then this is the one to go for.

Why you’ll buy one? Powerful; Capable; Economical

Why you won’t? 1.6 litre diesel will suit most needs

Rivals :

Ford Kuga €33,450
Volkswagen Tiquan €27,245
Mazda CX-5 €28,895

Honda CR-V 2.2 i-DTEC

Engine: 2199cc, 110kW at 4,000rpm, 350 Nm at 2000-2750rpm
Max speed: 190 kms
0-100km/h: 9.7 seconds
Emissions (motor tax): 149 g/km (€390)
Starting price: €31,995
Model price range: €31,995 – €51,565
No of Doors: 5
Euro NCAP: 5
Fuel type: Diesel
Fuel Economy (combined cycle): 5.6 litres per 100 km
Boot Capacity Seats up (seats down): 589 litres (1146 litres)
Car Seats: Isofix points for two car seats in the back, both simple to access
Length: 4570mm
Width: 1820mm
Height: 1685mm
Wheelbase: 2630mm

For more information check out Honda.ie or the Honda Ireland Facebook page

Geraldine Herbert

30th October, 2013

It may not look like a radical change from the last model but underneath its been completely re-engineered.
