\"battery\"<\/a>Battery failure is one of the most likely causes of breakdown and despite what people may think they don\u2019t actually last forever. Suzanne Keane explains some of the most common reasons for battery failure<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

One of the most common reasons for a car not starting is the battery.<\/p>\n

Your battery not only kick starts the engine but also keeps all electrical items running while you\u2019re driving. The engine in turn recharges your battery using the alternator.<\/p>\n

So why is my battery dead?<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Cold Mornings
\n<\/strong>Cold weather means your battery doesn\u2019t charge as quickly (when driving) and using items like wipers, heaters, fans will all drain extra power.<\/p>\n

Leaving the stereo on
\n<\/strong>Like any battery, a car battery can only take so much in between charges so if you leave a stereo on, phone charger plugged in or forget to turn off your headlights it will drain power from the battery.<\/p>\n

Short trips
\n<\/strong>If you only do short journeys your battery won\u2019t have sufficient time to charge fully so you should take the car for a longer journey on a regular basis.<\/p>\n

Alternator
\n<\/strong>As I mentioned above, the alternator charges the battery and if it\u2019s not working 100% your battery won\u2019t charge and your car won\u2019t start.<\/p>\n

Loose connections
\n<\/strong>I remember a cold journey from Cork to Wexford last February with my dash lights fading, afraid to use the stereo or heater incase the car cut out\u2026.. turned out the terminals weren\u2019t tightened properly!<\/p>\n

Overloading
\n<\/strong>Like any power supply overloading isn\u2019t a good idea. You wouldn\u2019t plug a DVD player, Sat Nav, Phone, Stereo, Speakers, Subwoofer, Lights and a charger into a single socket in one go and likewise there\u2019s a limit to what your battery can take \u2013 if you need to use all these things at once it will be worthwhile investing in a stronger battery!<\/p>\n

Keep an eye out for a good value set of jump leads and learn how to use them so you won\u2019t be stranded if your battery fails!<\/p>\n
