\nWhat is it?<\/strong>\u00a0Purists may baulk at the idea of a high performance turbodiesel model but not Audi. In 2006 they became the first car manufacturer to enter a TDI engine in an endurance race when they competed in Le Mans and with eight wins in nine years Audi clearly know a thing or two about making fast diesels. Now Audi are seriously showcasing the idea of a diesel engine in a performance car with their new\u00a0RS5\u00a0TDi\u00a0concept car, the first time that a diesel engine has powered a high-performance RS model. Dubbed a “technology study\u201d there is as yet no date as to when something like this is likely to make it into full production.<\/p>\n

What about power? \u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0At the heart of the\u00a0RS5\u00a0TDI\u00a0concept is a 3-litre twin-turbo V6 diesel engine with 240 kW (326 bhp) and 650 Nm of torque. However what is unusual about this concept is the use also of an electric-powered turbocharger, the purpose of this is to compensate for the turbo lag normally associated with diesels.\u00a0 By removing this lag, Audi are essentially removing the \u201cdieselness\u201d from the car.<\/p>\n

Audi RS5 TDi Concept <\/strong>on the track?<\/strong> On the track it is blisteringly fast and kept pace behind a RS6 with ease. \u00a0The electric compressor gives the car enormous power instantly when starting off. Audi reckon that the car sprints from rest to 100 km\/h in roughly four seconds and its certainly not a figure we can argue with.<\/p>\n

How Fast?<\/strong>Audi RS 5 TDI concept sprints from 0 to 100 km\/h \u00a0in 4 seconds, 0.6 seconds quicker than the petrol powered RS 5 Coupe and goes from 0- \u00a0200 km\/h \u00a0in less than 16 seconds. Top speed is 280 km\/h. Total bhp is 385 with 750 Nms of torque.<\/p>\n

How thirsty?<\/strong>\u00a0According to Audi the fuel economy is likely to be less than 5.4 litres per 100 km or 53.2 mpg.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s next? \u00a0<\/strong>A<\/strong> \u00a0diesel-powered performance car may not be in Audi showrooms just yet but the\u00a0RS 5\u00a0TDI Concept proves that a diesel RS can\u2019t be too far away.<\/p>\n
