With the National Ploughing Championships (click here for our competition<\/a>) taking place in just over a week we visited the South Kerry Ploughing Championships to get a feel for what to expect at the Nationals writes Suzanne Keane<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

There hadn’t been a ploughing competition held in South Kerry since the 1950s so when Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage decided to host a ploughing match just outside Killarney a huge turnout was guaranteed – Add in\u00a0sunshine to the mix and the car park was full within an hour with another 2 fields being opened to make space for the unexpected crowds.<\/p>\n

However, if ploughing wasn’t your thing there was plenty to keep anyone occupied – The Dog Show was a huge attraction with mutts of every size and shape parading around the ring for the chance to win a rosette! Other animals on display included Chickens, Alpacas and of course sheep!<\/p>\n

Kids were entertained by bouncy castles, slides and a Maze that had been cut into a field of Maize – “Maze in the Maize” and there was\u00a0a large display of vintage cars and tractors, a model farm and plenty of machinery\u00a0to keep your inner farmer satisfied.<\/p>\n

The unexpected\u00a0turnout means good news for the Kerry Cork Health Link Bu<\/a>s as profits from the South Kerry Ploughing Championships will be going towards keeping this valuable service for people with Cancer\u00a0running \u00a0– well done to the organisers!<\/p>\n

We’ll be announcing the winners of 5 pairs of tickets to the National Ploughing Championships<\/a> later today but if you’re not lucky enough to be a winner keep an eye out for a local ploughing match to get a taste of the action!<\/p>\n
