Choosing Breakdown Cover

Breakdown Cover

Sometimes, no matter how careful you are with general maintenance and servicing your car will let you down! Unfortunately it’s only when this happens that you find out how good or bad your breakdown cover is writes Suzanne Keane

So what are my options?

Usually your insurance policy will come with a basic level of breakdown cover (double check to make sure). Depending on the company this will cover roadside help and a tow (if required) to either the nearest garage or the nearest main dealer. You may also get the option for assistance at home – if your car won’t start in the morning for example.

If you don’t have a preference or a usual garage this cover may be sufficient. However, if you travel far from home you may want a policy that includes for you to be able to continue your journey even if the car doesn’t (i.e. a rental car, train/bus fare or overnight accommodation) or maybe even to have your car towed to a specific garage. In order to get this level of cover generally you will need to buy your breakdown insurance from a specialist company.

Hopefully you won’t ever need to use your breakdown cover but find out exactly what you’re entitled to before you need to make that call…..
