In advance of its arrival this autumn we went to Palma to drive Ford’s New S-MAX writes Geraldine Herbert.

What is it? Ford’s new seven seat S-MAX has been given sharper styling, a classier interior and a host of new safety technologies and features.

First impressions of the new Ford S-MAX?  It now looks much more part of the family with the now familiar Ford over sized grille and the S-MAX is  a sleeker and more sporty looking family car.

What about the interior?  If you are looking for bags of space, then the S-MAX has it. Three separate seats help reduce squabbles and access to the two rear seats has been made even easier with an Easy-Fold second and third row seats which means each rear seat can be folded flat from a push-button control panel. There is according to Ford 32 seating and load-space combinations.

And on the road? The S-MAX has always been one of the best-handling large MPV’s and despite some  tough competition the new version is no different. It handles really well, with little body roll which is great news for passengers – and the steering is light, and the suspension cosseting

All the engines on offer are quiet and wind and road noise isn’t an issue either, so expect any high-volume distractions to come from those inside the car!

the S-MAX features first-in-segment heated and cooled Ford Multi-Contour Seats that offer the Active Motion massage function.

How much? Prices for the all-new S-MAX will start from €33,860 and it will be offered in two trims Zetec and Titanium. Everything you could possibly wish for and more is available and even the entry level Zetec comes with a very high level of equipment including 17” alloy wheels; fog lights; day time running lights Ford SYNC; dual zone air conditioning; electric parking brake and crucially for those with three small children Isofix on 3 seats in the  2nd row seats. Trade up to the Titanium spec and you get among other goodies a traffic sign recognition system that incorporates an Intelligent Speed Limiter. This very clever system reads the speed limit signs ahead and reduces the supply of fuel so it slows the car down, so no more speeding tickets!

How safe? The S-MAX is one of Fords most advanced models so apart from just the  basics, from airbags to electronic stability control the S-MAX is crammed with features to keep you safe. There are 16 new driving technologies that help you drive and control your vehicle safely using camera, radar, and ultrasonic devices including Blind Spot Information System, Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Keeping Alert, Lane Keeping Aid and Driver Alert.

What about my options? Most S-Max owners are likely to opt for a diesel engine so there are three 2.0-litre units to choose from, 120bhp, 150bhp, 180bhp but there is also one petrol a  1.5-litre Ecoboost. For the first time the new S-MAX will also be available with Ford’s Intelligent All-Wheel Drive (iAWD).

3 words to describe the Ford S-Max? Practical; Fun; Smart
