First impressions of the new Mazda CX-5? It’s a demonstration of confidence when a car company offers the chance to drive the old model at the launch of the new model. And while it comes with an element of risk that’s exactly how the international press launch of the face lifted 2017 Mazda CX-5 started.
What is new? There are a few styling tweaks to update the car’s design inside and out. Outside the CX-5 the pronounced grille takes centre stage, while the longer bonnet and new headlights lend an overall sharper and smarter look.
What about the interior? Similar to the exterior there’s a sense of déjà vu inside but overall it’s more stylish with smart ergonomics and a fresher appearance. The harsh black plastics have given way to soft touch high quality materials and textured coverings. The 7 inch infotainment centre display has moved to the top of the dashboard and the instrument cluster is bright, intuitive and considered. A heads up display is also available with a range of information including navigation and speed limit.
Space in the front is good and the CX-5 can seat five people in comfort. The new version has also retained the same practicality; boot space is a generous 506 litres and the boot also has some handy floor mounted hooks for securing objects. The power operated tailgate, offered for the first time on a Mazda, is ideal when returning with hands full of shopping or young kids.
Engine choice? Power comes in the form of a 2.2 litre turbocharged diesel engines with 150PS or 175PS, and normally aspirated 2.0 petrol with 165PS. There is also the choice of a six speed manual or an automatic gearbox and front wheel drive or Mazda’s i-ACTIV AWD system. The 2.2-litre 150ps turbodiesel engine is best for strength, speed and fuel economy.
Mazda CX-5 on road? Key among the changes has been a significant improvement in refinement as wind and road noise have been reduced and the hushed cabin of the CX-5 quietly insulates driver and passengers. The CX-5 has always been a good car to drive, with well weighted steering and plenty of grip. On the road it will carve through twisty corners with minimal body roll concealing its bulk and size very well. Country dwellers would appreciate the all-wheel drive option.
How much? Prices for the new CX-5 will be announced closer to the launch date but an increase of €1,000 on the current starting price of €27,995 can be expected. You shouldn’t have to worry about breaking down as Mazda is known to build reliable cars.
How safe? You won’t have to fret about safety also as a full set of airbags and Smart city brake support are standard.
