It’s that time of the year for the WheelsforWomen xmas get together and where better than Mondello for the perfect girls day out writes Suzanne Keane.
After an early start (or not for some) the wheelsforwomen team arrived at Mondello Park. This would be the first time the 5 of us – Laura Keane, Caroline Kidd, Jennifer Mullan, Geraldine Herbert and myself – were in the same place at the same time!
Following a few quick introductions and the signing of “death or injury” disclaimers we set off in two teams to take on the Off-Roading course at Mondello. Team 1 was Caroline and Jennifer (the experienced off-roaders) and Team 2 included Geraldine and the 2 novices!
I was first up and despite my fear of getting stuck managed to get around quite easily (well it was just a bumpy field with some mud to begin with) – and then Laura took over….. she had barely made it around the corner when we arrived at the actual difficult parts of the course! Metal ramps, railway balancing and driving through a container….. which made me very glad that we had swapped when we did!
Despite saying she was out of practise Geraldine’s experience showed when she got behind the wheel….
But once we had the Land Rovers suitably covered in mud there was a surprise in store….. Autotesting!!
On the practise runs I started off great (with spinning tyres) but it was all downhill from there! By the end I had knocked a few cones and missed a gate or two….. but my timed run looked and sounded great!
Jennifer’s laps looked even better and Laura’s runs got quicker and more accurate with each try (definitely one to watch) while Caroline went with the “slow and steady wins the race” approach.
However, the fastest driver on the clock (who incidentally never resorted to using the handbrake and was also the only one wearing heels!) was Geraldine…… 2nd place went to Laura and Jennifer came in 3rd….
So a great day out for the wheelsforwomen crew and a big thank you to everyone at Mondello Park for looking after us!!
