Helen Cranny’s First Car ………..

Not Helen’s car but one that looks almost as good

What was your first car and why did you buy it?
My first car was a 1967 Morris Minor. I only did my Driving Test in the 90’s and passed first time!! My late Partner and I set up and ran the Irish Morris Minor Owners Club, so I had to have a “moggy”! She was a beauty in cream and navy blue with navy interior trim with cream piping.

How did it change your life?
I loved having the freedom to go anywhere at my own spreed, my own route, with the radio on my favourite station.

What was the longest trip you ever took in the car?
I did a lot of driving around Dublin and the country in it going to Bandon, Co.Cork and Navan

What was the worst moment in the car?
My worst memory were those associated with dying batteries, particular one time with a friend and her young son in the car!

Any memorable journeys, good or bad?
It decided to die on the old slip road from the Blanchardstown by pass onto to the M50 in the middle of tea time traffic in the few days before Christmas!!!! I had a spare battery but just couldn’t lift it out of the boot. Finally a very kind man decided to help me. (Well, he didn’t really have much choice as i was blocking the road!!) But he was very surprised when I was able to tell him what was wrong and that I had a spare battery!!!! The worst time was its final trip. She got was was known as “sore paw” basically the drive to the front wheels broke, and as this was long after my Partner had died, there was nobody who could fix it for me, so she had to go. Very sad time but have very fond memories. I then got a beautiful Nissan Almeria
