We talk to Ruth Scott, presenter of RTÉ 2FM’s weekend breakfast show, and newest member of the wheelsforwomen crew
If you were a car what car would you be? I would be an Aston Martin; classic, stylish, sleek looking and has appeared in movies!
Do you have a favourite car gadget? I could not function without my Bluetooth. I spend a lot of time on the road travelling to different work things. I catch up on calls & podcasts without having to take my eyes off the road. When I’m lost, google maps will direct me (in a very loud and bossy voice) on the bluetooth)
Who taught you to drive My mother made my 7 siblings & I reverse and move around the tiny t-shape driveway at home before we were ever allowed out on the road. After that I got a present of driving lessons for my 21st birthday. Absolutely the BEST present I ever got. It cut out a whole section of my life where I would otherwise have been fighting with or my mum or whichever sibling would have been instructing me.
What’s the fastest you have ever driven ( legally)? I recently got to do the Seat Leon Mondello challenge. It was stripped down to make it lighter, special safety seats & safety roll-cage built in. To say it was spruced up is like saying that I dusted myself down before my debs! I was strapped into my bucket seat with helmet firmly strapped on. I may have been the slowest lap time that day but on the short straight stretch, I believe I’m sure I hit 120km in 3rd gear!
Whom do you most admire in your industry? I admire Larry Gogan so much. He’s no raw recruit and after all his years of experience, he is in a permanent good mood. He loves new music & takes every new challenge in 2fm on the chin. Even though we have been working together for almost 15 years, I still get a kick when I see him in studio doing his thing on air.
What was your best career decision to date? At one point in my career, I decided to say “YES” to every work possibility that came up. It meant that I found myself doing some very unusually things – abseiling down the side of the Aviva Stadium, climbing Kilimanjaro, cycling 100km to Electric Picnic. All things I would never otherwise have done & all things that I LOVED! I still like to say “yes” to as much as I possibly can.
What is on your car stereo right now? I am a terrible flicker. You’ve got to know what your competitors are up to to keep on top of them and so I listen to every single radio station. I just got Bombay Bicycle Clubs new album. They called into the show yesterday. There was a mini orchestra in our little studio and it sounded immense! I’m always listening to international radio stations podcasts. Love hearing how other cultures & nationalities deal with situations on air.
One item you couldn’t live without? Yes I am that loser that is going to say that I can’t live without my phone. Like I mentioned before I’m often on the road travelling to various places of work. Google maps gets tested to the very max. Likewise, the podcast app takes a battering while I’m in the car too. I like to watch Facebook, Twitter & instagram for work. I will catch up on Netflix on my app too. I’ve gotten into downloading some shows from channel 4OD so that when I’m in a wi-fi free zone, I can still catch up on something.
How do you relax? I love walking. I love nothing more than putting on the warm clothes and heading off with headphones on for a good 60 minute march. I really enjoy cycling & am threatening to get myself a new bike for my birthday this year as I’d like to do a lot more cycling. If all else fails, and the notion of exercise is just too much, then let me watch a few episodes of “How I Met Your Mother” or “Friends” and the beast is soothed!
Describe yourself in one word? Fun
