The iconic Renault 5 is back — reimagined as a fun, retro-inspired electric car for a new generation, writes Suzanne Keane. With bold styling and modern tech, it’s set to make a big impact in a small package. What is it? The iconic Renault 5 has been reimagined for a new generation and is making a very welcome comeback as a funky and affordable EV. First impressions of the new Renault 5? The character of the original Renault 5 has really been captured, for those of us who remember, and for those who don’t it’s a funky city car with an almost cartoonish appearance, sitting on 18” wheels. The widened wheel arches are a throwback to the 5 Turbo and the front end looks really mean, for such a small car. The tall taillights of the 1970s car have made a comeback and are linked with a horizontal stripe, which visually lowers the car even more. For those with range anxiety, there’s a bonnet display which will tell you how much charge is left. What about the interior?  The interior is a slick combination of contemporary styling mixed with retro detailing. The seats have a really sporty look and the “5” branding continues through to the inside, just in case you forgot what you were driving. The fabrics are made from 100% recycled fibres. My favourite touch was the vertical stitching on the panel above the glovebox. “Gear” changes are via the e-pop shifter and boot space is 326 litres And on the road?  Behind the wheel it doesn’t feel like a small car and is very steady. There’s plenty of pep when you put your foot down (0-100kmph ion 8 seconds) but it’s also happy to just cruise along in traffic. It will take 30 minutes to get from 15% to 80% charged and has up to a 410km range. If storm Éowyn has given you a greater appreciation for electricity the new Renault 5 features V2L which will allow you to power a 220V appliance from your car’s battery through the use of a special adapter. How much? The base spec Renault 5 starts at just €25,995 for a 40kWh battery, rising to €32,995 for the top of the range model with the larger 52kWh battery. How safe?
