With the National Ploughing Championships (click here for our competition) taking place in just over a week we visited the South Kerry Ploughing Championships to get a feel for what to expect at the Nationals writes Suzanne Keane
There hadn’t been a ploughing competition held in South Kerry since the 1950s so when Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage decided to host a ploughing match just outside Killarney a huge turnout was guaranteed – Add in sunshine to the mix and the car park was full within an hour with another 2 fields being opened to make space for the unexpected crowds.
However, if ploughing wasn’t your thing there was plenty to keep anyone occupied – The Dog Show was a huge attraction with mutts of every size and shape parading around the ring for the chance to win a rosette! Other animals on display included Chickens, Alpacas and of course sheep!
Kids were entertained by bouncy castles, slides and a Maze that had been cut into a field of Maize – “Maze in the Maize” and there was a large display of vintage cars and tractors, a model farm and plenty of machinery to keep your inner farmer satisfied.
The unexpected turnout means good news for the Kerry Cork Health Link Bus as profits from the South Kerry Ploughing Championships will be going towards keeping this valuable service for people with Cancer running – well done to the organisers!
We’ll be announcing the winners of 5 pairs of tickets to the National Ploughing Championships later today but if you’re not lucky enough to be a winner keep an eye out for a local ploughing match to get a taste of the action!
