BMW 1 Series Review: Sharper Looks, Smarter Tech, Same Driver Thrill

Geraldine Herbert test drives the BMW 1 Series

The newly refreshed BMW 1 Series gets a bold design update and upgraded tech while keeping its dynamic spirit intact. We test the 120 M Sport to see if it still delivers behind the wheel.

What is it?
The BMW 1 Series is BMW’s answer to the premium hatchback segment — compact, refined, and performance-oriented. The latest update brings sharper styling, improved tech, and mild-hybrid efficiency. We tested the 120 M Sport model, now slightly larger and more sophisticated, aiming to keep its dynamic edge intact.

Styling
With bold design tweaks, the 1 Series now features sleeker headlights, a sportier front bumper, and more sculpted rear styling. Optional contrast roof colours and vibrant paint options add flair. At 42mm longer and 25mm taller than before, it maintains a compact profile while echoing cues from BMW’s crossover range.

Under the Bonnet
The 120 M Sport is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system and a smooth 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Power is sent to the front wheels. For more performance, the M135 offers a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. There’s no diesel option available.

What About Inside?
The interior feels every bit the premium product, with heated front seats as standard and an upscale materials finish. The new twin-screen display merges a 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen with a 10.25-inch digital cluster. However, the traditional rotary iDrive controller has been removed in favour of full touchscreen controls, which may divide opinion. Rear legroom is fair, though headroom is limited for taller passengers. The boot offers 300 litres in the mild-hybrid model, expanding to 1,135 litres with the rear seats folded.

And Safety?
BMW includes a solid suite of driver aids: lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, multiple airbags, and more. The tech stack makes it a safe and secure daily driver.

Rivals
Key competitors include the Audi A3 (€36,865), Cupra Leon (€38,005), Mazda 3 (€33,395), and Volkswagen Golf (€33,865). The 1 Series sits at the pricier end but counters with brand prestige and refined dynamics.

What are my options?
The 2025 BMW 1 Series comes in three trims: Sport, with essentials like 17-inch alloys and heated cloth seats; M Sport, which adds 18-inch wheels, sport styling, and an optional all-wheel drive (123 xDrive); and the M135 xDrive, a performance model with 296 hp, all-wheel drive, M-specific design, and upgraded brakes. You can choose from vibrant paint colours (including matte finishes) and leather-free interiors like Veganza or Alcantara. All trims include BMW’s latest twin-screen infotainment and advanced driver tech, with optional performance and tech packages for extra flair.

Verdict
Stylish, fun to drive, and tech-rich, the BMW 1 Series remains a compelling choice in the premium hatchback class. While rear space and boot capacity are limited, and the switch to full touchscreen may not appeal to all, its engaging drive and polished finish help justify the price tag. It’s less about flash, more about finesse — and that still resonates with enthusiasts.
