AA Ireland Survey Reveals EV Adoption Hurdles and Charging Preferences

AA Ireland conducted a customer survey on electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid usage that covers ownership trends, charging habits, cost perceptions, and infrastructure needs.

The survey found

  • Over 30% of EV and hybrid drivers do not use public charging units.
  • Experiences with public charging vary: 30.19% find them very unsatisfactory, while 4.40% find them very satisfactory.
  • 56.54% have a dedicated home charging device installed.
  • Only 6% plan to install a home charger.
  • 63% of those who charge at home find the process easy, with most charging overnight to take advantage of off-peak rates.
  • 30% charge only when necessary, regardless of time or location.
  • 8.33% charge while at work.
  • 40% of respondents find EVs much cheaper than traditional petrol or diesel vehicles.
  • 13.33% perceive EVs as much more expensive.
  • Opinions on electricity prices for charging vary: 18.28% find rates very reasonable, 8.60% find them very expensive.
  • Clear demand for improved public charging infrastructure and better cost management.
  • Respondents suggest the need for more widespread and reliable public charging stations.

Jennifer Kilduff, Head of Marketing & PR for the AA (Ireland), said, “The survey reveals that positive environmental factors and a smoother, quieter driving experience are the primary motivators for choosing to drive an EV.”

Kilduff added, “Addressing these concerns could significantly enhance customer satisfaction and promote further adoption of electric vehicles in Ireland. It’s evident that while many drivers appreciate the benefits of electric vehicles, the current infrastructure and cost perceptions are barriers that need to be addressed to make EVs a more carefully considered option for everyone.”
