The Dacia Jogger will put an end to back-seat squabbles and is also cheap at the price – but it is not without compromises writes Geraldine Herbert What is it? It’s one of life’s great ironies that as our families became smaller, our cars grew larger. Today behemoth SUVs are the family cars of choice but, despite their large footprint, many offer seating for just five and if you are in the market for a seven-seat option, the choices narrow and prices rise. But fear not. New to the market is Dacia’s Jogger, a seven-seat bargain and our test car this week. Is it a looker? Outside, the Jogger is boxy but pleasant and inside it’s a curious blend of people carrier and estate car, majoring on function rather than luxury. What’s the interior like? Legroom and headroom front and back are good, but the real high point of this car is just how usable the third row of seats is. Family cars should be where all passengers are happy and in the Jogger even adults will fit comfortably, including those who don’t know each other too well. With all seven seats in use, the boot space shrinks to 270 litres, or just enough for a few small shopping bags, but if you need extra space there is another 23 litres of storage space spread throughout the cabin, including a huge glove box plus a host of deep pockets and cup holders. What does it drive like? Powering the Jogger is a new 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine; a hybrid version will follow next year. On the road it rides and handles well and will amble merrily on motorways, if a little noisy at times. What are my options? Three trim levels are available: Essential, Comfort and Extreme SE, and even the entry-level model, priced from €24,590, comes with niceties like air conditioning, cruise control and rear parking sensors. Our review car, the range-topping Extreme SE priced at €27,990, came with extra goodies including heated front seats, wireless smartphone mirroring and built-in sat-nav. Will it break the bank? The Jogger will cost you much less than other seven-seat options including the Kia Sorento (€56,500), Skoda Kodiaq (€45,315), Hyundai Santa Fe (€56,445) and the Peugeot 5008 (€44,210). The Citroen Grand C4 Picasso is a versatile MPV that embraces Citroens signature quirky style. Who is it aimed at? The Grand C4 Picasso is aimed at those looking for a practical and stylish 7 seater with a touch of French flair in a compact package. Styling? MPVs are never the most stylish cars on the road but the Grand C4 Picasso benefits from Citroen’s trademark quirky styling with smooth lines and a sleek front end while the 3D taillights do help to give the car a slightly wider appearance from the rear. Under the Bonnet? The car tested was powered by a 1.6l Bluehdi with 120PS. It won’t win any drag races but is perfectly adequate for everyday driving. What about inside? Inside the Grand C4 Picasso is extremely versatile. The dashboard is clean and uncluttered and the vast amount of glass makes for a bright and airy cabin. Each of the 5 rear seats folds independently so it’s extremely adaptable for carrying any size or shape of load, even with passengers on board. The 3 seats in the middle row are of equal size and will allow for 3 ISOfix seats to be installed easily and there’s no tunnel to get in the way of a support leg in the middle seat. Also, with a child seat installed in the middle there’s plenty of space for adult passengers on either side. On the Road? Despite looking a little on the awkward side, the Grand C4 handles surprisingly well and felt at home on narrow country roads. There is little or no engine noise and the suspension soaks up bumps with ease. And Safety? Standard safety equipment includes ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution & Emergency Braking Assistance, Electronic Stability Control with intelligent traction control, Automatic parking brake, Hill start assist and automatic activation of hazard warning lights while inside the cabin there is an unfastened seatbelt visual warning system. What are my options? The entry level “Touch Edition” comes with 16” alloy wheels, cruise control, rear parking sensors, 7” touchscreen and a height adjustable driver’s seat. Upgrading to “Feel” will get you 17” alloys, cornering fog lights, tinted windows, front and rear parking sensors with a reversing camera, Citroen Connect Nav and a 12” touchscreen.
